Addiction

He thinks of her, her gentle touch
the reason he's alive.
Reproachless love, it means so much
as he tries to survive.

It's her that spurs his spirit on,
her love that never dies.
He feels closest to the dawn
When, in her arms, he lies.

If only love could quell his lust
rid him of this affliction
but it cannot and so he must
beware of his addiction.

His hands begin to tremble,
His arms begin to quake
To stop it would be simple
if this promise he could break.

Just on the edge of sanity
he seems to walk a line.
He's losing his humanity
It's drowning in the wine

People once counted as friends,
are just temptation now.
This evil thirst it never ends,
they offer him the trough.

He can't go back, he can't press on
though bravely he persists
reaching forward to the dawn
the darkness he resists.

Steadfastly she will cling to him,
though others shake their head.
They say his inner light is dim
and he has made this bed.

"Let the demons take him down
it's he who let them in
Let him in his sorrows drown
is not addiction sin?"
